Sebum
 Sebum is the fatty secretion of the sebacious glands in the epidermis of the skin. It is a thick greasy semifluid lubricating substance composed of fat and epithelial debris.
The level of sebum production determines whether our skin is dry, normal or oily. Its function is to lubricate the skin and seal in moisture. [Sebum is produced within specialized cells and is released as these cells burst].
 Too much sebum production can cause acne and other skin disorders. Those who suffer with acne on average secrete more sebum than those who do not have acne and the more sebum that is excreted the more severe the acne can be.
Sebum is odorless, but its bacterial breakdown can produce odors. Sebum is the cause of some people experiencing "oily" hair if it is not washed for several days. The prescription drug isotretinoin significantly reduces the amount of sebum produced by the sebaceous glands, and is used to treat acne.
