Microdermabrasion & Acne
Acne & Microdermabrasion:
Microdermabrasion is a tried and tested treatment for Acne. It has been proved that, following salon treatment, microidermabrasion can visibly reduce the effects of acne and reduce the visibility of scar tissue/acne scars. Microdermabrasion improves overall skin tone and lustre leading to healthier looking skin.
Microdermabrasion is best used in conjunction with other skin care treatments to help reduce the inflamation that acne can cause. Many salons offer a complete program for acne control. Often people with acne also have very sensitive skin, it is therefore important to use the best skin care products available. Unfortunately the best skin care products usually come at a price but there are some excellent creams, ointments, cleansers and toners available at a reasonable price. However the best that we have tested have been those created by Crystal Clear International (some of the finest salon treatments available and have had excellent results with sufferers of acne).
Many of the topical creams avaiable for acne, such as Benzoyl Peroxide, act upon the skin by killing the acne bacteria. However many notice a burning sensation and it appears that the surface of the skin is "burnt" away. Other ointments, such as Retinoids, are used to unblock the pores of the oil glands in the skin and thus reduce blackheads and whiteheads. Many would agree that these treatments are rather limited in their results - especially if you have a rather extreme flare up. In the more extreme cases topical antibiotic creams can be used (or taken orally in very severe cases). When using antibiotics the results can be spectacular.
Obviously the first stage of acne treatment would be to get it under control and advice from your medical practitioner should be sought at your earliest opportunity. Microdermabrasion may not be suitable while the acne is active, so it would be worth contacting a salon for advice (if in the UK visit www.renewmedica.com).
Acne Scars:
Acne can leave some rather nasty scars! This is extrememly upsetting for the individual but recent medical advances have lead to various treatments to reduce their visibility.
1) Microdermabrasion: We consider this to be the best treatment avaiable. Effects can be further enhanced Oxygen Treatments to stimulate skin regeneration and stimulate collagen growth.
2) Photorejuvenation: Using laser or broadband visible light, only really suitable for mild acne scarring.
3) Scar Revision: Surgical removal of acne scars.
4) Laser skin resurfacing: This technique uses a combination of lasers. The skin is removed layer by layer, removing the uppermost portion of scars. The heat generated by the lasers also tightens the skin which has the effect of smoothing out scars!
For those not able to afford the above treatments there are chemical peels available which, although not as effective as the above, can reduce the visibilty of scarring. However this is best performed at a salon and is therefore likely to be expensive. For most make-up/camouflage and skin fillers may be the only option.
Acne - Longterm:
Best advice is to follow a healthy diet and drink plenty of fresh clean water! Proper and regular cleansing will help maintain healthier skin. This statement seems to run in opposition to the various untruths about Acne - such as eating chocolate can cause Acne. However it is reasonable to assume that if you lead a healthy life, eating healthy food and detoxing (water helps greatly here), your body will be better equiped to fight infection. You can read more about Acne Untruths - here.
"Acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin, caused by changes in the pilosebaseous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland). The most common form of acne is known as "acne vulgaris", which means common acne. Excessive secretion of oils from the glands combine with naturally occurring dead skin cells to block the hair follicles. ..."
