Acne Untruths & Myths:
1. Eating Chocolate Causes Acne
This is an extremely common belief which has no basis in fact. There is virtually no evidence to prove that there is a correlation between diet and Acne. The belief may have developed by over keen parents wishing to warn children to eat sensibly and avoid junk food! Many other foods seem to have the misfortune of being blamed for Acne - potato chips, burgers, pizza etc. all of which are myths.
Eating a good and healthy diet may help the immune system in combating Acne - even if it doesn't it is a good idea to avoid too much junk food or foods high in fat or sugar. Unfortunately, sometimes, people are effected by some foodstuffs which, in most cases, turn out to be an allergy. Alergies to foodstuffs can create problems for the skin and should therefore be avoided or medical advice sought.
2. People with Acne do not wash enough
What a horrible thing to say - but some people do say it. This is horrific, in many cases the Acne could appear worse due to over vigorous washing. Acne suffers are advised not to scrub their skin hard or use abrasive cleaners (often done a s a consequence of this myth). Instead the face should be washed twice daily with a mild soap and gently patted dry, followed by any topical Acne treatment.
3. Acne is a teenage problem
Rubbish! For many Acne can be a lifelong problem. It is true that Acne is more common amongst teeenagers as a result of the increased levels of androgen during puberty but fortunately many do outgrow acne as their hormone levels become more regulated (Androgen production continues during adulthood).
4. Males and females suffer Acne at the same rate
Untrue. Infact during puberty males are far more likely to develop acne than females. Androgen is a male hormone! Later, when hormone production is more regular, the figures balance out. However, in women between the general ages of 18-40, Acne may be more apparent as many women find that they suffer from Acne flare-ups when they are premenstrual.
5. Using a sun bed cures Acne
There is no evidence to show this to be true. It is far more likely that the tan camouflages the acne. A suntan is damage to the skin and the body actually produces more sebum while the skin is tanned. This increase in sebum production could cause more acne. To further aggravete the problem many of the acne treatments available make the skin more sensitive to the ultraviolet (UV) rays produced by the sun and sunbeds - which could lead to increased damage to the skin.
6. There is nothing you can do to stop acne
Mmmmm, sounds like an excuse to be lazy here. OK so treatment of Acne is not easy and different people react differently to the many treatments available. Salon treatments such as Microdermabrasion can help with reducing the effects of Acne such as the awful scars but there are also a great many topical treatments available which can have spectacular results. It is far more likely that, by not doing abything, your skin will be damaged far more than is really necessary.
