When Should You Consider Taking An Acne Pill?

You are probably familiar with the concept of treating acne with topical solutions, such as face washes, lotions and gels, but you may be new to the concept of treating acne with oral medication. Taking a pill for acne is not something you should jump into, as these pills can have serious side effects. But if you’ve tried numerous topical therapies, and nothing is giving your relief from your acne, using a pill for acne can help stop your acne for good.

If you are female, and are considering taking an acne pill, you should be prepared for the fact that most oral acne medications require you by law to be on an oral or injected birth control. Acne pills cause serious birth defects in fetuses, so you should not take this medication if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or opposed to taking oral/injected contraceptives. If you are pregnant and suffering from acne, keep in mind that it is caused by the hormonal changes in your body, and is temporary. You should seek temporary topical treatments instead of taking an acne pill.

Emotional Health And Acne Pills

Something anyone considering oral medication to treat their acne should be aware of, is that one possible side effect of many acne pills is depression. If you have a history of depression, or other mental illness, you should not consider taking an acne pill without the consultation of a mental health professional. If you are taking medication for depression, or another mental illness, you should also not consider taking oral medication for your acne. Make sure you are open and honest with your dermatologist about your mental health if acne pills are suggested. But acne pills can also cause depression in individuals that had no prior experience with it, so just be aware of this fact if you start taking oral medication for your acne.

The good thing about acne pills is that they can be very effective in severe cases of acne where all other treatments have failed. They generally only take a few months to improve the condition of your skin, and generally prevent you from ever experiencing as severe acne as you had before you started taking the medication. But you do need to be aware of its risks, and talk in great detail with not only your dermatologist, but also your regular physician and mental health professional, if applicable.
